There are 9 professional staffs and 43 beds in the department. Among the staffs 4 are consultants and 2 associate chief surgeon. About 6,000 out-patients visit the department and 750 of them are hospitalized each year. About 460 patients receive all kinds of thoracic operations. The rate of resection attains to about 98%.

The staffs of the department are expert in diagnosis and treatment of thoracic tumor. Besides the conventional operations on esophageal tumor, radical operation of esophageal cancer, lobectomy of lung, pneumonectomy and excision of mediastinal tumor, lots of formidable and new operations were developed, such as total gastrectomy of gastric cardia cancer (R2), sleeve resection of bronchus with lobectomy, throracoscopic pneumonectomy, radical excision of esophageal cancer by thoraco-abdominal separate incisions, cervico-thoraco-abdominal triple incisions or right thoracoabdominal incision. Meanwhile, the department has gain much achievement and valuable experience in the combined therapy of esophageal cancer, gastric cardia cancer and lung cancer. The stent therapy with radiotherapy, chemotherapy and TPN do benefit the esophageal cancer with intermediate and advanced stage. Nowadays, the 5-year survival rate after treatment of esophageal cancer, gastric cardia cancer and lung cancer attain an advanced level in the county.
