Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery

The department of hepatobiliary surgery deals with the diagnosis, treatment and management of benign and malignant diseases of the liver, pancreas, biliary tract, spleen and allied diseases.

There are 42 beds in the ward. The department includes 11 surgeons with training representing the entire spectrum of surgical experience. Nearly 6,000 out-patients visit the department each year, among which 1,000 are admitted in the in-patient department, and over 500 operations have been performed per year.

In addition to the basic regular HPB operations, many new methods and techniques are applied, such as hemihepatic vascular clamping, hepatic vascular exclusion(HVE) by using a shunt for hepatectomy, pancreatic regional resection combined portal vein transplantation with internal jugular vein, trilobectomy for hilar and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, and self-pancreatic islet cell transplantation after total pancreatectomy.
