The department of lung cancer was founded in Nov 1999. It was derived from the former department of thoracic tumor, which has concluded 2 parts, i.e. the treatment of lung cancer and of esophageal carcinoma, to meet the demand of further development. There are 43 beds in the department. The medical staffs include 12 doctors, including 4 professors, 3 associate professors and 5 attending surgeons.
The patients treated in the department are mainly those with lung cancer. Patients with other diseases, such as chest wall tumor, carcinoma of gastric cardia, mediastinal tumor and esophageal carcinoma, are also treated here. As the incidence of lung cancer has been rising in recent years, a protocol for diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer has been developed in the department. Cerebral CT scans and systemic ECT are the routine preoperative examinations. Mediastinoscopy is also a routine procedure to make the staging for the preoperative lung cancer patients. Furthermore, many complicated operations, which involves in partial resection of the atrium, tracheal reconstruction, Pancoast tumor resection, superior vena cava resection and reconstruction, bronchi and pulmonary artery-plasty can be performed. Placement of Ni-Ti memory metal stent for the patients with late esophageal cancer or carcinoma of gastric cardia is the conventional clinical work here. In recent years, the techniques of microtraumatic surgery, including pleura biopsy, pleurodesis, wedge resection of the lung were developed. More than 1,200 patients are hospitalized in the department per year. The number of out-patients amounts to over 6,000 each year. The number of operations attains to 800 approximately each year.
