The department of pelvic and urinary oncology was established in 1952 and is the one which integrates the diagnosis and treatment of gynecologic cancer, urologic cancer, rectal cancer and post-peritoneal cancer. The number of beds in the department amount to 80. Five chief surgeons, 5 associate chief surgeons, 3 attending doctors, and 3 resident doctors are employed here. Each year about 7,000 outpatients and 1,700 inpatients are treated in the department and over 900 different operations are performed, among which the rate of resection attains to 99%.

The diagnosis and treatment of gynecologic cancer, urogenital cancer, rectal cancer, and retroperitoneal cancer are our major research concerns. In the early 1950s, we took the lead in external irradiation, radium and 60Co internal irradiation in treating cervical cancer in China. We are the first domestic leader in the surgical field of anterior pelvic exenteration, posterior pelvic exenteration, and total pelvic exenteration for rectal cancer. Since the lymphangiography is initiated here, it thus becomes the surgical guideline for abdominal and pelvic lymphatic metastasis in China. At present, most operations on pelvic and urologic cancer, such as cytoreductive surgery for ovarian cancer, radical hysterectomy, radical vulvectomy, radical cystectomy, radical nephrectomy, Miles' operation for rectal cancer, colocystoplasty and ileal cystoplasty, have become well established and common here. In the department the micro-traumatic surgery is now synchronous with international level, such as interventional therapy for renal carcinomas, laparoscopic resection for renal or adrenal tumors, and transurethral resection of bladder tumors which have been applied widely. Now, the integrated and canonical therapeutic regimens of surgery, combined with radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and intracavitary treatment, have been formed in the department.
