Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital (TMUCIH) is the birthplace of Oncology in China. It has a history of more than a hundred years and has become one of the most famous modernized cancer hospitals worldwide. It is also one of the largest bases for cancer prevention, treatment, training and research in China. The hospital established in 1861 with the name of ”London Christian Church Hospital”. After new China founded, it was named as “Tianjin Municipal People’s Hospital” in 1950. Prof. Jin Xian-Zhai (Hyen Taik Kimm), the well-known oncologist, set up the first tumor ward in China in 1952. Since then the hospital has specialized in Orthopedics and Oncology. In 1972, the orthopedics department was moved to become a specialized orthopedics hospital and this hospital became a specialized cancer hospital with 341 beds. In 1977, the Institute of Cancer Research was established with 8 departments in it. In 1987, the hospital was moved to the present site and was given the new name as“Tianjin Cancer Institute and Hospital”. In 1996, the hospital has affiliated to Tianjin Medical University, so it got another name as Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital.
For half a century, the hospital has developed into one of the largest cancer centers in China. The present Director of the hospital, Prof. Hao Xi-Shan, is the Academician, Chinese Academy of Engineering, is the concurrently President of Tianjin Medical University. He is the leader of the oncology and tutor of Doctorate degrees. There are 29 clinical departments, 11 technical departments in the hospital. 8 laboratories in Cancer Institute. The editorial office of the Chinese Journal of Clinical Oncology (CJCO) which is one the kernel journals at the state level published monthly. The English edition of CJCO was launched in 2004 with publication bimonthly.
The office of Continuing Medical Education of Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, Tianjin Anti-Cancer Association and the Head & Neck Cancer Society, Breast Cancer Society and Cancer Hospital Management Society of Chinese Anti-Cancer Association are also located in and supported by the hospital.
