Biography in Brief

Li Shuling was born in 1920. He graduated from Manchuria Medical University in 1943. In 1950s, Dr Li began to specialize in oncology, especially in head an neck tumors and breast cancer. He is one of the earliest doctors in China to work on head and neck tumors and also one of the founders of the China Society for Head and Neck Surgery. He has written widely in areas related to the problems of head, neck and breast tumors. He has published over 100 articles and authored the monographs. “Tumors of the Head and Neck: Diagnosis, Treatment and Prognosis (1983,2002)”, “Tumors of the Breast (2000) ”.

He has been researching science 1964 into cerebral artery blood arteries supply and a new approach to carotid resection without vascular reconstruction. This was first successfully performed in 1979. Upto 1982, seventeen cases have undergone this operation without mortality and cerebrovascular complications. Dr Li first concluded that, in humans, the normal cranial blood supply was sufficiently compensated by preservation of the carotid artery. On one side in 1970, Dr Li initiated a comprehensive treatment for breast carcinoma by combining preoperative adjuvant chemotherapy and conservation operations, which strikingly promoted long-term survival rates. His design of a functional tracheoesophageal shunt for vocal rehabilitation after laryngectomy was applied in 1981, and 80% of patients developed speech ability equivalent to that of a normal subject. For the design of this operation, Dr Li gained the National Invention Reward, Dr Li being a professor of Tianjin Cancer Institute. Dr Li is still researches vigonously, even in his 80s.
